Fear of being "Not Good"
Human beings grow up in social spaces where the value of " goodness" is extremely hyper rated.
This not only leads to humans wanting to conform to the good values around them, but also creates a massive fear of not being good.
Ever since childhood we are subjugated to this process of discerning between what is good and what is bad. We are shown role models of ideal behavior and told to follow the paths of the ones that showcase overall good values. Apart from the positive values that this brings us to fit into the social structure of humankind. What really concerns me is the negative effects it brings in. Just to be fitting into a set structure and form of "goodness" we avoid questioning any thoughts beyond it. We also fail to recognize that the very "Goodness" that the world preaches us is relative in nature and changes from place to place and time to time. It then becomes a deep imperative to follow the good spirit just to avoid any ire or repulsion from the society.
I wonder when the first time Einstein questioned his teachers it was considered good, or even for that instance the first time gandhi challenged the very idea of british empire. I dont mean to use the same techniques to make good look bad here, but then would you ever be able to see a greater good without challenging the status quo? . Wouldn't the society remain within its perimeters protecting what they believe disallowing any new thoughts or ways of living.
Also when the so called conformity of the society seems to be rosy and well followed, arent people in their own ways and spaces breaking the conformance or bending the rules in the facade of goodness.
The laurels of following the rule or doing what the world expects you to do just to avoid being called a bad person has itself done greater harms to our society than the rulebook of "being good". If we want our societies to change and transform the true inner-selves that god has gifted us, we need to let go of the black and white image we paint in front of our children. The world is grayscale and not black or white and we need to make sure we communicate that to generations to come.
Just to ease out our labelling, our capabilities to think and make faster decisions we have created a world inside our heads that splits in two halves, however the truth being that the world is variant it has all the elements presents at any given point with both the perspectives of being good and bad.
And unless we dont take control of this reality, we may well be stuck in the "trying to fit in.." category. Good or bad is your own decision and no one on this planet has the right to take it away from you....and when i say this....i may be completely wrong ;)
If you are always worried about fitting in to be good...you may never even test something that was considered "Not Good"
